He Whakaaraara

A call to action

EPIT is proud to partner with Tātai Aho Rau Core Education, other education NGOs/trusts, UNICEF, and indigenous Māori leaders (Mātauranga Iwi Leaders Group) to deliver He Whakaaraara.

Our commitment to improving inequity in our education system, via collaborative multi-sector partnerships, is why we support He Whakaaraara and see its concept as a ‘living annual report’ as a critical means of ensuring currency and relevancy. We believe this new resource will be of benefit to policy and decision-makers, government agencies, funders, researchers, media, and any organisation supporting those working with our young learners.

He Whakaaarara is a place where community voices and research data comes together to show what the education experience is like for some of the most vulnerable learners in Aotearoa New Zealand – Māori, Pacific, Rainbow, disabled and refugee / migrant. In highlighting the inequities and barriers faced by these learners, we hope to bring the statistics to life through a combination of video storytelling from impacted communities, narratives of lived experiences, and supporting research data.

It is not complete. This is the beginning of the journey. He Whakaaraara will evolve over time as we gather more stories and insights, but we hope that one day a website and report like this will no longer be necessary.

He Whakaaraara means call to action. Therefore, we encourage you to understand the barriers and challenges many learners and their whānau | families face on a daily basis.  We ask that you do something about it. Join with others, find, and fund community-led solutions, or fund an initiative to make things better.
