Making Sense of Careers Leadership in Aotearoa Workshop

A Catalyst for Change

EPIT is committed to contributing towards an equitable education system where every learner can thrive. One of our areas of focus is careers education, a pivotal component that can support our rangatahi toidentify what pathways might lay in front of them, and arm them with the tools needed to navigate those pathways.

Building on Research Insights

Our initial research, Empowering our Youth, delved into the current state of careers education in New Zealand, identifying key success factors. The subsequent research, Empowering our Youth Part II, gathered insights from a wide group of practitioners and further illuminated the challenges and opportunities within the area of careers education.

A Collaborative Effort for Impact

To translate these insights into actionable steps, we brought together a range of cross-sector partners for a workshopping session to share, ideate, and deep-dive into this subject. This diverse group of educators, thought leaders, and disruptors shared their perspectives and collectively identified some key actions to move this Kaupapa forward.

Key learnings:

  • Equity:  How might we ensure that there is a clear focus on equitable outcomes for our underserved communities?
  • Collaborative Partnerships: There was a clear need identified for more collaborative partnerships, particularly between education and industry. How might we create a more integrated system?
  • Storytelling and Evaluation for Impact: How might we better capture the good stuff that is happening and tell those stories to demonstrate impact?
  • Lifelong Journey: Careers education is a lifelong journey, and yet it is often condensed into Years 12 and/or 13. How might we change this narrative?

Next Steps

With a strong focus on actionable steps, we are excited about the potential impact of this collaborative effort. We will continue to work with our partners to explore ways to implement some of the actionable strategies developed during the workshop and advocate for changes that support equitable careers education.
