We recently launched Part II of our Empowering Our Youth research into what is happening in careers education in secondary schools across the country. The online event was well attended and there was much interest and a highly engaged audience.
Empowering Our Youth Part II builds on our August 2023 research report, Empowering Our Youth, which highlighted just how crucial school leadership is for the successful career transitions of their students. EPIT's Dr Lynette Reid, Evaluator and Careers Education Researcher, conducted a nationwide survey of school leaders, their leadership teams and those working in careers education, to obtain a whole-of-country view and expand on the original research.
The research aimed to amplify the voices of those in secondary schools and their explanations and insights into career education practices and the context they practice in. The two participant groups were Principals and senior leaders and all careers, transition, and pathway staff in secondary schools across Aotearoa New Zealand. Bringing together the perspectives of both groups of participants was a purposeful component of the research design, to challenge the concept of traditional models of career education, based on participants’ own dispositions, values and experiences.
