E Tū Tangata (ETT) aims to tackle tall poppy syndrome (TPS) by creating accessible resources for schools. The initiative will develop decentralised materials, including video modules and printable content, allowing schools to independently adopt the ETT kaupapa through an onboarding and accreditation programme. By naming and addressing TPS, ETT believes this approach will spark positive change, reduce associated behaviours, and promote thoughtful reflection, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment in New Zealand schools.

The drive behind this initiative

Aotearoa faces an equity challenge as psychosocial issues disproportionately impact marginalised populations. Cultural norms like "Tall Poppy Syndrome" (TPS) and the effects of colonisation exacerbate mental health difficulties, bullying, and school disengagement, particularly among youth. To address these challenges, a fundamental shift in social norms is essential to foster a more inclusive society for all New Zealanders.

Approach to change

  1. A reduction in youth mental health issues and bullying by challenging cultural norms like "Tall Poppy Syndrome."
  2. A shift in social practices creating a more equitable environment, improving outcomes for Māori and other indigenous groups.
  3. More inclusive schools leading to greater student engagement and improved academic success for historically marginalised populations.

About

E Tū Tāngata

‘How do you change a culture of criticism and negativity that has been internalised and perpetuated generationally in New Zealand?’ E Tū Tāngata (Stand Together) is an organisation directly addressing this implicit social norm, otherwise known as Tall Poppy Syndrome. E Tū Tāngata is not a programme, but rather is about initiating a cultural change.
