This initiative builds on previous work carried out through EPIT’s Innovation Seed Fund which focused on building relationships and partnerships in Te Tai Tokerau, including with iwi, to expand the Talking Matters rich oral language programme into this area. Talking Matters is now partnering with community groups and whānau to provide culturally responsive training and support for oral language development in ways that work for their community.

The drive behind this initiative

Aotearoa New Zealand’s literacy has been in decline since the early 2000s with low levels of literacy being prevalent in children with speech, language, and communication needs. Literacy has the power to change this and improve the quality of life for individuals, their whānau and communities.

Approach to change

Impact for Equity

  • Whānau and communities of Te Tai Tokerau are experiencing support to provide language-rich environments for the young children in their whānau.
  • Pathways to effective literacy are developing through strong foundation skills in oral language within familles.
