The aim of the initiative was to harness the untapped potential and knowledge of the Springboard Trust leadership network (school leaders and volunteers) to accelerate positive student outcomes. To do this Springboard Trust developed n ‘Insights Model’ that supports their cross-sector network work with school leaders in Aotearoa. The aim is to turn these insights into actions that will create the conditions for rangatahi and tamariki to thrive.

The drive behind this initiative

Not all students are successful in New Zealand’s education system. There is duplication of effort and mistakes across schools in addressing issues of equity and a dearth of substantive applied evidence and strong strategic leadership. High-quality school leadership is not a given, it requires investment and stimulation.

Leaders are in a space of privilege and power, and it is your job as a leader to take everyone along with you and create the environment where everyone can thrive.

Approach to change

Transforming schools together: The Springboard Trust is essentially an open innovation ecosystem in real-life environments (schools) using iterative feedback processes throughout a lifecycle approach of an innovation to create sustainable impact in the education space.  Principals are able to join many networks so it will be important in the discovery phase of the project to understand what will encourage them to participate so that the design of this project accommodates this high participation.

Impact for Equity

  • Insights that have been generated from a wide range of voices, specifically Māori voices, throughout the network.
  • Insights gained are leading to action for more equitable learner outcomes.
  • Dissemination of findings shows how insights have been used by principals to improve equity outcomes for learners

Being lifted out of the day to day is crucial for leaders as it gives clarity and focus to the job. Measure what can’t be left to chance

Learnings & Outputs

What has worked well‍

  • Bringing leaders together from inside and outside of education
  • Listening to their stories
  • Acting on their needs to evolve the network.

What we are continuing to improve

  • Continue to evolve our insights and our mechanisms to share and create impact from them.
  • Provide support to middle and aspiring leaders as well as principals | tumuaki and our leaders for education beyond the education sector

What we have learnt about approaches towards equity

  • School leaders find it challenging to access support that they need, when they need it, in a way that consistently meets their needs.
  • Our principals and school leaders value our support in meeting their unique equity challenges.
  • Our leaders for education from outside the education sector value the insights and events we have had (individuals from several hundred organisations outside schools have attended)

From participants and the community

  • Leading is challenging in the current environment.
  • Optimism is a prerequisite to effective leadership.
  • Leaders need to use their influence to serve.
  • Using evidence to show impact is a challenge for many leaders.
