The aim of this initiative is to create digital literacy resources in te reo Māori, that foster safe online interactions. Māori rangatahi and whānau will be part of a small co-design team who will develop these resources drawing on existing tools and building new content specific to New Zealand Māori contexts. The content will be used to generate ongoing discussions about how to safely interact online. For this initiative, Netsafe is collaborating with Tātai Aho Rau Core Education.

The drive behind this initiative

There is a growing body of research that supports the need for Māori-specific online safety resources. The Netsafe 2019 Digital Safety Survey found that Māori are disproportionately affected by online abuse and privacy breaches. With few resources available in te reo Māori or tailored to Māori communities, this project aims to address this gap.

Approach to change

Manaakitanga and whanaungatanga drive the approach to change, prioritising the well-being of individuals and whānau online. By highlighting the harms of disinformation and promoting responses, alongside the potential for manaakitanga online, the initiative aims to foster a supportive digital environment. Utilising an iterative feedback loop aligned with Tātai Aho Rau’s theory of change, resources are co-created to empower communities.

Impact for Equity

  • A safer Aotearoa NZ for our ākonga and rangatahi online.
  • Community awareness of disinformation is reducing the negative impact.
  • Rangatahi and whānau understand how to engage safely online.
  • Online spaces are being safely used for positive engagement.

About

Netsafe

Netsafe, under the Harmful Digital Communications Act (HDCA), receives, assesses, and investigates reports of online bullying, abuse, and harassment, offering assistance for resolution. They also deliver cyber safety information and facilitated sessions on this for school leaders and teachers. For this initiative, Netsafe is collaborating with Tātai Aho Rau to co-create te ao-based digital literacy modules in te reo Māori, which will be done with input from rangatahi.
