R4L will collaborate with a core group of whānau, iwi, and hapu to create community resources and support materials that support whānau to be confident first teachers of their tamariki. This barrier-free, culturally responsive approach will be piloted in Kawerau and Tairāwhiti | Gisborne.

The drive behind this initiative

Starting school with key foundational skills helps tamariki to successfully negotiate their early schooling and yet across Aotearoa there are an increasing number of communities where tamariki are arriving at school without some of these skills. There is a lack of culturally responsive, community-based approaches.

Approach to change

Participatory Action Research (PAR), will be used to draw on the existing knowledge and expertise within local communities to ensure effective co-design, trial, and implementation processes.

Impact for Equity

  • Tamariki arrive at school with strong foundation skills.
  • Children have confidence in their learning and capabilities.
  • Whānau have increased confidence and skills in being the first teacher of their tamariki.

About

Ready4Learning

Ready4Learning (R4L) Charitable Trust was established in 2022 to support the foundational skills of young tamariki so that they arrive at school strong in their identity, and confident in their learning and capabilities. They do this by creating resources and providing training that is culturally responsive and community driven. Supporting whānau as first teachers is integral to this work.
